Ugh. We don’t even know what to say about this.
Filmmaker Jonathan Bucari is making a movie using the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings as a backdrop- and he’s filming it on the outskirts of Newtown!
We understand that school shootings are fresh on everyone’s mind, and that someone might be inspired to tell a personal story.
But you know whose mind it’s still super fresh on? And raw? And tender? The people of Newtown. Rudy Marconi, First Selectman of neighboring Ridgefield, says:
“I will do everything in my power to prevent this… Mr. Bucari is going to have to find another location.”
What exactly is this movie about anyway? The film’s producer says:
“Illness is a story about the tragic fate of Benjamin, a thirteen-year-old boy with a terrible mental illness, and the ever-growing fear of his parents after they learn about the shooting in Newtown in December 2012.”
If you must tell a story involving a school shooting, can’t you at least fictionalize it? Use a fake name of a fake town? Not real kids who really died?
This just feels too much like trying to capitalize on a tragedy.
